The Royal Family of Thurn und Taxis, with Prince Albert the 12th Prince of the lineage at the head, have many events to invite the public to their beautiful Palace.Every Christmas they open up the Castle Park with its elegant lagoon and many Ginger Huts with delicacies from around the world. Llama hats and mittens, handmade artisans work wonders in front of you and of course the famous Glub wine that has that extra punch of rum to it.
And if you love music festivals where you can dress up as a Princess and Prince, you must come to their July music events. I am hoping Mick Jagger decides to play in 2026, for old times sake, as he is a favorite friend of Princess Gloria (and Prince Johannes).

The Historic City of Regensburg must have several ghosts. It sure seems a town of mystery on the opposite side of the Stone Bridge. Especially late at night.
One of the very old traditional historical places is Meier ein Lokal.

Stefan, who owns the old town trendy Cafe Lila for over 30 years and the 5-year-old Wanderlust, recently bought Meier ein Lokal, a gastropub that used to be a Brewery which has been described "as cozy and comfy as in a Poem."
If you want to sit down and hear Bavarian spoken among the crowd of locals, listen to people telling tall tales of the Christmas Markets or challenging each other to a Bavarian Beer Drinking game. Come here.
If you want a Seasonal Bavarian Menu that changes monthly and is handwritten, such as Pike Perch fried on vegetable sauce; Creamy polenta with balsamic mushrooms; Fruity & Spicy broad bean stew with tomatoes leaf spinach and potatoes, come here.

"I don't like to be bored. So, here my chefs change the menu monthly!"

I love that he surprises you every month so that the locals, who frequent Meier ein Lokal, aren't bored in life. Well, at least not at any of his restaurants you won't be bored. In a city of more and more ethnic restaurants popping up, it is very nice for both the students and visitors to have a traditional place to come to. Nothing super fancy. Just very good food.

Come here about 9:00 pm and sit in one of the wooden booths inside the cozy German Taverna. I love the antiquity of the bar area, with the memorablia on the shelves and walls, the old wooden tables, the darkened lighting at night.  The wooden bar is my favorite, and it reminds me of a movie: I always feel as if I am in an old Bavarian town, which I am!
I think the card of the Joker is perfect for any of his restaurants, as he seems very serious and subdued, but he has such funny dry sense of humor! A delight and honor to interview. pretzel soup - Provided by Tripadvisor
As Traditional Bavarian as you can get. Personally, there is nothing better than sitting in Regensburg when it is winter and digging into rich heavy food surrounded by laughter and beers. Although before Stefan bought Meier ein Lokal, it was completely traditional Bavarian with the usual dishes; I am excited to see what his chefs come up with. Traditional, yet using the local ingredients creatively. It should be interesting.

"There are chapters in your life when you feel as if you need to do something new; and for me, at least now, creating my team, who all have minds of their own, learning each other's language, and experiencing the culture, the real culture of a land that is foreign to me, Vietnam, is the chapter that I am focused on." -FlorianPhoto
"Ya, so I met with Viet, who is an amazing chef while he worked at another restaurant, and we clicked and decided to open our own. I have 3 partners including Viet, Christian and Thi Trang. I am the only one who isn't from Vietnam, actually!" laughs Florian.
As the interview progresses, I see that he and I are also the only people who don't speak Vietnamese.
"Yes, sometimes it is frustrating for me to communicate, but I have Kim, who speaks both German & Vietnamese, and he helps to translate from me to Viet in the kitchen!"

"I want people to come & be adventurous. There are so many items on the menu for you to taste. Whatever you choose, my chefs will arrange them to wow you when it is brought to your table. I want the entire experience for your special night out to be just that; special." Photo of steak
Each one is presented differently. You order what you would love to try from the 195-item menu of Vietnamese & Japanese Fusion, and he arranges a creative plate just for you.
Along with that vision, Florian's philosophy is, "I want a challenge to take what I find fascinating about the culture and to make it happen. To bring to life the exotic flavors of each dish. The broth alone for the authentic Vietnamese soups take 10 to 12 hours to make. But the flavor of each ingredient can be tasted as you sip it. It's amazing, really."
"I know that it looks like a lot of food, but it is very light and healthy. There is a trend now where the German people, and I think it is a trend worldwide, want to eat light meals. The Vietnamese food is filling but doesn't feel heavy. And my team make these as a beautiful presentation to you. It is an event to come here. An experience. I want my guests to come and enjoy the novelty of it. "
From Viet's homeland of Vietnam,  you will find recipes that, in Regensburg, can only be found here.
"The fish we receive daily from the Northern shore of Germany and the ingredients are the freshest we can find. The duck is expensive, very expensive, but we have to have it. Same as the Octopus and rest of the fish. But I want the freshest and the best and I have to pay for that."
"Right now, if you want to come and try our lunch specials, they're so reasonable that all of the Arcaden Gallery office staff is starting to come here for their breaks! Which is great. I am happy to have locals experimenting with the food. I hope the students find us, too, so they can have a little culture in their diet!"

Now,since Stefan now owns 3 restaurants, I ask him what is more fun: only owning and concentrating on Cafe Lila the last 30 years or owning all of these very cool funky places.

"It is more fun now. I can just travel and find new items for my places. And at the same time, I miss moments. For instance, my team at Cafe Lila had a going away party for one of my long-time workers and told me about it afterwards. I was a little sad because I wish they would of invited me!" Well, Stefan has a curious mind and a sense of humor. Would he have come if invited?  "Probably not because I don't drink and party any longer!"

"I travel to Berlin a lot finding new breakfast items that are the latest trend and bring the recipes here. My favorite place in Berlin is Fruhstuck 3000. They always had the newest innovative items. So, I have a couple of secret places there that I frequent to find something unusual, and I am always finding new places as well" says Stefan, the originator of Cafe Lila. I have a feeling he likes to just eat the newest trend too!

"Yes, well of course I try it all. It is funny, though. There is one item on my menu at Cafe Lila that has been on there from almost day one. It is the German Breakfast. Everyday a certain person, or people actually, order the German Breakfast. I try to get rid of the German Breakfast, but it is the only thing that they eat on the menu, so I have to keep it."

"Cafe Lila is very trendy. I have brought the big city of Berlin to Regensburg for the last 30 years. Every month or so, I add new items for the guests to try. They love it here,"

Yes, I would say so that they do. You can experience Berlin's edginess in Regensburg!

Who I am still amazed and totally impressed that he travels to Berlin all the time just to try and find the newest breakfast ideas to bring back to Regensburg!

Stefan continues describing the crowd, "You probably won't find lawyers, businesspeople at Cafe Lila. You will find them probably at Wanderlust, my poke bowl bistro, but here it is very trendy and people come here to exchange ideas and to have conversations."

Meet Stefan and Franziska, the lovely couple who own Spitalkeller
Very nice to meet Stefan's second in command, his wife Franziska, tonight, who
lent me her vision on the magic of Spitalkeller from her eyes & her husband's.

"Stefan loves the History of the Place.
He researches it daily and finds out new facts associated with it.
It was built in 1648 and
                                              was used by Kastner Weinberg
                                                          as a Wine Cellar.
The Lagerkeller III came in 1881, then Spital."

Photo of bread roll

I got a very nice tour of the 3 big inside rooms, full of large wooden tables and 300–400-year-old wooden chairs. I said that I love the brass taps on the multiple bars in the Spitalkeller and the historical furniture.
"Yes, we don't have a restaurant. We have a Wirtshaus. That is a place where people come to eat and to meet. To meet friends, to have conversations, to play cards to have parties to sit for hours and drink Spital and trade life stories. It is a feeling you have when you come in here. Maybe it is the historical structure of the place, but I think it is the Bavarian culture."
     "The food is traditional Bavarian.
Bavarian food is very different                    than German food, though.                       Very distinct."

Photo of bread roll

"For instance, we have   Ofenfrische Spanferkelhaxe,            which is a way of cooking                       basically a little pig's leg.
                 A "hamhock".
I am vegetarian, by the way!"                   she says laughing!

              "Location. Spitalkeller
is in a peaceful quiet section of the city.
I don't know why I love it so much.
I guess because it is very calm
                          & peaceful."

And although supposedly there is no stupid question in life, I somehow manage to ask the one that there is, "So, do you serve any other beer in the Spital Wirtshaus?"

"Um, no. We only have Spital beer," answers Franziska graciously.
Beautiful authentic wooden floors, eclectic and authentic memorabilia, perhaps from the time the building was first opened and used as a Wine Celler in 1648, and traditional Bavarian Food, make Spitalkeller a must on your trip to Regensburg. Photo of bread roll
That complete with a huge underground cave with train tracks to deliver the traditional wooden barrels of wine from one end of the tunnel to the other is what makes it unique.
It is absolutely something that seems out of Walt Disney and SnowWhite & the 7 dwarfs. It is a wine cellar from the 16th century, which if you're here on October 25, you can tour it for free, along with the Whiskey Museum.
At the Spitalkeller, as at all Bavarian Beer Gardens, people come here to have fun. A casual good time! And they seem to have a good sense of humor, too.
Photo of Spital Festbier
I ask Franziska if she could lead me to all of the rooms and she happily says yes. She starts with the outdoor beer garden. It is cold here in Regensburg; about 5 degrees centigrade, yet Franziska seems very much at home.
"It's just beautiful here. In the summer it is always full of people and now with the Walhalla Whisky Museum attached in the garden's back side to the Historical building of Spitalkeller, we have even more guests on the weekends."
Right on cue, about 8 people materialize from the gardens and she asks if I want to see the Whiskey Museum. Of course! Everybody wants to see the Whiskey Museum! We walk up some stone steps in the beer garden and there it is. When you walk into the Whiskey house, be prepared to be surprised. It is amazing and has a dark theater seating in the middle, a home bar for his guests in the back corner and behind us glass cases in capsules scattered around full of the most unusual whiskey bottles I have ever seen. There is 1,000s of these. Absolutely beautiful.

"The Museum is a collection that I started as a young man at the age of 16.
I bought my first Jack Daniel's bottle, a small one, and started working at the Jack Daniel's factory in Tennessee as an exchange student. I worked there in 1999, 2000 & 2001. Now the Museum has over 14,000 bottles, some available at every bar in Regensburg and some so rare that only one exists in the entire world, " says Pit, the teacher by day and Whiskey connosier by night.

The Collection is so immense that it would take you
literally several days to study each and every bottle.
"Everyone has a story, though. I remember each bottle and how I purchased it or if it was given to me. One of my most rare bottles comes from a journey that I took my students to as a field trip. It was in Italy and one of the students had to go to the bathroom, so I walked with him to a Cathedral, and a tiny pub was next to it. I looked up at the pub and there in site; a collection of 5 of the rarest whiskies in the world just sitting on the shelf in this provincial pub. I asked the girl if I could buy 2 bottles and she said she would have to talk to her boss. So, I came back 1/2 hour later and she said that she couldn't get a hold of the boss but the $300 I was willing to give her sounded like a fair deal. They're worth $3,000 each now, so that is a very good story of how Whiskey appreciates!"
Well, we certainly hope her boss appreciated the extra tip!

If you come for your free shot, and have never tasted something so rare, feel free to give a little in the numerous piggy banks dotting the museum.

After 8 pm on Thursdays and 5 pm on Friday and Saturday, it is open for members only; but you're welcome to become a member once you're here.

Some of the unusual pieces of history, that Pit has in his whiskeys, would be the whiskey that, in 1945, Hitler ordered made for the Germans. He wanted to have the best whiskey in the world; actually, his words were, and we'll kind of quote:

"WANTED A WHISKEY TO UNDERMINE THE MORALE OF THE BRITISH TROOPS: THE BEST WHISKEY BEING HITLER'S",

"Of course, making the best whiskey in a couple of months would be impossible", laughs Pit. But he does have a bottle of it, and while the Museum is full of historical facts about the whiskey collected here, it is purely for appreciation of whiskey. -Pit

Ciao, Trattoria Marina, Cafe Karl's & Eisgalerie Gelato                                                               Stadtamhof Platz

What do the Italian Restaurants Ciao, Trattoria Marina, Cafe Karl and Eisgalerie Gelato have that others don't have? The Family Dynasty of Frobel!  They're all in the family of Frobel, you know the famous Frobel family that opened Trattoria Marina on the opposite side of the Stone Bridge? Photo of 20 minutes
"My father started the Trattoria Marina in 2006," the beginning

of a delightful story starts as I interview Lucas Frobel.

"We had just the small part here on the corner and the other restaurant, Ciao, was run by another family. In 2009, my father bought Ciao. In 2014 he opened the Eisgalerie Gelato and it was in between the 2 restaurants."

"The problem was that people would sit on one side or the other and ask for pizza from Trattoria Marina or ask for wine from Ciao and we would say that they're 2 different restaurants. Finally, my father moved the Gelato place to the opposite side of the cobblestoned street and connected the two restaurants with one kitchen. Much easier."

"The restaurant is now only Trattoria Marina, with one menu, but people love Ciao so much that we kept the sign," says Lucas, one of the sons who now, along with his brother Nicolas, own and run the coffee cafe and the gelato side of the business.

"To bring a little bit of authentic Italy to Regensburg"
Says their website and very much the motto of Lucas's father for the last 40 years.
The food at Ciao and Trattoria Marina; oops, I am doing it again. At Trattoria Marina is totally Italian. The pizza is on the Naple's style, and the friendly, affectionate nature of the family and the team spills over literally onto the cobblestones where most of the tables are. Germans are hearty people. They love the outdoors and the culture of the Italian trattorias, which always have outside seating, is embellished here.

Photo of stadtamhof

However, having said that, when Lucas asks me if I want to sit outside or inside; I say inside. Hey! I am American, we run at the first snowflake to the fireplaces inside. Lucas laughs, "We have a lot of Americans here from the Viking boats on the Danube. And from the University and I guess just visiting Regensburg. They tend to sit inside in the winter."
The rest of Europe sits outside with standing room only usually on the busy nights and weekends. The entire plaza, almost completely with restuarants owned by the Frobel family, is filled with people. They have stone benches where people tie their bikes and these are always occupied too, as guests have Aperol spritz aperitivos from either Karls or Trattoria Marina, waiting for their tables.
Trattoria Marina
It is such a charming side of Regensburg, although only one long block of cobblestones, it is packed with culture.
Both Eisgalerie Gelato and Trattoria Marina are practically ON the Stone Bridge, so don't worry about not finding them! The only decision is which one to try first.

"The best thing about having a great father like we do is that he has so many lessons to teach us. If we got stuck opening our cafe with paperwork or something didn't go as planned, he is always there for us. He has been in the business in Regensburg for 40 years and he knows all the answers!" Photo of topping

"In the early stages, when me and my brother would suggest items that we thought Ciao and Trattoria Marina would benefit from, my father would always say, well that is a good idea, let me think about it," laughs Lucas.

"Which usually meant that we                had a lot ot learn."

Photo of Spina Ricotta Lasagna

"So, I would say the one thing that has changed with experience and owning our own cafe, if we would tell our father that we would like to add an item to Trattoria Marina's menu, he would just say to do whatever we want; that he trusts us. So, yes that is very nice to have. That respect and trust."

The View from Karls cafe, which both Nicolas and Lucas designed.
"We pretty much have the square covered," says Lucas. "If you want early breakfast at 8:00 am,you can come here. You will always find my father and his friends having breakfast and coffee every morning. Since the Trattoria Marian opens at 11:00 am, he and his buddies used to have coffee inside the closed restaurant every day. Now they come here. He can relax and enjoy himself. It is interesting to me to have as my guests his friends that have known me since I am 5 years old. I show immense respect to these people. If my friends come here, I am professional, still, yet of course they're my personal friends. They gave us suggestions on the name of Karls. That is my grandfather's name, so it fit; but we tried the name out with them, and they all agreed that it fits the German language. Hey, let's go to Karls. So, it is Karls."
"At the Eisgalerie Gelato, we had a lovely woman who is now our head chef at Karls. She is from Thailand and she is married to one of my father's head chefs who has worked with him for 20 years. She makes the most amazing food and she has totally redefined our kitchen."
"The Gelato is real Italian Gelato and as with every thought my father puts into the restaurants, he wants it all to be authentic. Me and my brother work 7 days a week for months and months and in the winter, because the Gelato place is closed, we take about a 6 week vacation. Just to chill out, so to speak."
"We went to Japan for 4 weeks, which was so amazing. And to a farm in Africa, that a friend of mine owns. We saw 8 people the entire 2 weeks. It was totally relaxing and calming. Can you imagine driving a tractor and seeing leopards and safari animals and just being one with the land? Incredible. It was the place I loved most in my life."
Photo of ice cream sundae
When it came time to design the cafe, Karls, it was 100% vision of the 2 brothers, and it is playful, clever, witty & sophisticated.

It is fun, light and trendy.

"For instance, the desserts are all from Nana, from Thailand and they taste as great as they look. Completely original such as sweet potato cake. It sounds unusual but trust me, it tasts incredible."

Nicolas and Lucas took over the Ownership of the Gelato Shop named Eisgalerie and I asked Lucas if they changed anything since becoming the owners when their father "gifted" it to them.

Lucas says,"Nicolas has been the director there for the last 5 years and I have been both the assistant director and the assistant director here at Trattoria Marina, so it was a smooth transition. We had already made the different flavors in the last years, so we didn't go all crazy and make entirely new ones. I would say with our Cafe Karl, we have revamped the entire concept into our very own style. We even have different coffee here. We want to be an additional feature of the square, but not an extension of Trattoria Marina."

We don't do this at Karls Cafe. The team is 3 the team is full of friendliness & service. It is the 2 brothers, yes, yet the father is always in the background helping out if asked.  A team of 3.

"When I got Spike they told me he is a Frenchy,
but I don't think he is a Frenchy.
He is a mixture of a couple breeds.
Everybody in Regensburg knows Spike and
they love him more than me!"

"There are always regulations; we operate within the EU law. However, we do have some products that you feel a high with, under the regulations. We are constantly searching for the VERY GOOD STUFF. Weed is illegal, but CBD is legal. We're hoping the EU raises the bar to THC approval, like the states. But we have to wait and see. I knew the regulations when I asked a friend if he wanted to open shop here 3 years ago and honestly after many years in the "shadow economy", I could say, we're here in the alley near the Cathedral."
"You would have to fly to Jamaica, like me, or the states for good weed, but we're improving our products. And it is healthier to vape with my vape pens than to use "fire" anyway. So, if you're into a relaxing healthy way to smoke, try us."
Okay, Spike is cute, but I am sure that people who want to remain calm and happy love the owner of the Bavarian Krauts just as much as they love Spike.

But, the important thing is Daniel's love of music:

"I love Music and we sponsor               a lot of music festivals.             My favorite is hip hop.
I like Eminmen & Dr. Dre."

    What about Taylor Swift?
        "She isn't Hip; Hop."
                 -Daniel

"I went to Jamaica last December for a vacation. I hadn't gotten my passport, so it was a rush 2-day process, then I flew with a friend spontaneously to Jamaica. It is supposed to be for 3 weeks, well, you know vacations. It completely relaxed me, and I loved my time in Jamaica."Photo of products

They have VERY GOOD                 WEED in Jamaica!"

So, now that you know, you can grow.
And as Daniel says, "Want to get High, To the SKY."

                                           Unter den Schwibbogen, 21

Welcome To Regensburg All you Students & Backpackers
                                                       It is College Party Season.

Come meet the NJ Bouncer "Angel" & the Boss Marcus
So, I meet Angel for the first time tonight, although he tells me that he has lived in Germany about 10 years or more and he wonders why he has never met me! Well, I am back and forth to Germany and America and apparently never crossed paths.
"I am the bouncer, " he says as he introduces himself.
I didn't even know they had a bouncer and besides Marcus is a big, buffed guy, so he doesn't really need a bouncer, but Angel is full of enthusiasm & joy and talks all the time, so he probably entertains the guests more than he does any real "bouncing!"
Photo
Angel pipes in, "I would say it has a cool Southern California Vibe, you know. Just a place to drink beer with friends and have a good time."

"The beer is the cheapest                              anywhere in any bar or                        club in Regensburg."

"You can have 3 1/2 liters for around 10 euros. The music is great and different every night. The place has funky College Pub Crawls starting in October, and people just feel comfortable here."
Photo "You know when I first opened the bar in 2016, my vision is to own a bar where students and guests could drink cheap beer, listen to live music, chill with friends, and if they wanted to play darts or beer pong, they could."

         "Free Stamped Entries into
            Late Night Clubs &
Free Long Drinks at Late Night
                Club Angels on Friday
                     & Saturdays"

"Now my vision is the same, but I am more connected, so I can offer little perks for choosing to come have fun with us before going to the clubs," says Marcus.
Photo
"We have live music on Thursdays, but not every Thursdays, so you have to check the website & Facebook. I do have it always a couple times a month," says Marcus who tries to keep the days consistent. "We have your Country Music on Tuesdays and that is the way it has been since 2016. People love the Country Music, especially the Americans." Yes. I know. Photo of metal

Charming, Rustic, Open with light, And Eclectically Sophisticated is Wanderlust.

"I opened Wanderlust, which us Germans use as a term to go hiking, about 5 years ago. I researched which city in the world, at the time, has the most poke bowl authentic restaurants. Los Angeles came up."

"So, I flew to Los Angeles,                                                                                                                      and I went to 30 Poke Bowl restaurants,                                                                                         and I found the best of the best                                                                                                                         to come back and make mine."

The menu is outstanding, my chef the best and you already met Raoul, who is originally from Mexico but studied 7 years in Ohio!"

Yes, Stefan is that kind of person. Completely takes you off guard with his conversations and the way that they veer off into fascinating territory.

Seriously. Have you EVER heard of a restauranteur flying 1/2 way around the world to research POKE BOWLS! Amazing. And the Poke Buffet is pretty good too!

"See the floors? They're from my barn, from my farm. All of the wooden flooring comes from there. I built it myself. Well, I didn't build it physically myself, but I gave them the wood." Stefan says. "It has a rustic calming feel to Wanderlust. The Germans love the outdoor sports, and it is a place where you can come in and enjoy a healthy break from being outside all day."
Besides the famous Poke Bowls, they have classic breakfasts, but they create these in a very unique way.  The Eggs Benedict Wanderlust with toasted rye bread & spinach, wild salmon ceviche, poached eggs, beetroot may and salad with cashew crunch and pomegranate.  Or something I am determined to try along with the Hawaiian Porridge that has fresh strawberries, fruit, carnalized peanuts & coconut chips, is the Pancakes. These are vegan Banana Pancakes, pictured below, with Oat flakes, banana, pomegranate, fresh fruits, cashew crunch, mint and maple syrup."
These pancakes sound very American, yet they're served in a very different style. So, a must try at Wanderlust.

Stefan says that the cakes here and at Cafe Lila are different. They change all the time, so I would just say try all of the cakes. However, he says the ones at Cafe Lila are heavier!

has retained its charm in a Global World of Modernism
Photo of outdoor seating
It is one of the few places where sitting inside feels as if you're sitting outside. Except it is warmer inside! Yet the environment is created to have that feel of bringing the outside in. And while Stefan has told me that the closest translation of Wanderlust is hiking in the hills and mountains of Germany, I feel that Americans can relate to the meaning. In America it translates to a lust for seeking new places and a curiosity about the world and Stefan certainly has that.

It is much fun when you can talk to the bosses of the Bohemian and the bar connected to it: Chin Chin. I had a chance to hear what Jurgen, the owner, had to say about his special place.

"Being present is everything. At Chin Chin, we don’t just serve drinks – we create a mood, a story, a moment. We love blending into the night, feeling the rhythm of the guests, the music, the energy. Authenticity can’t be faked – when the team and the guests see that we live and love this place, it resonates. That spirit is a big part of our success."

"Details aren’t just aesthetics – they’re mindset. Whether it’s the way a cocktail glass catches the light or how we fold a napkin in the room – it                 speaks of care                                           passion, intention."
     Room – Bohemian Hotel

        What is his
                favorite room?

"Room 23 – it has this playful, almost cinematic vibe. The light is               amazing in the morning,
and it feels like a secret hideaway in the heart of the old town. It’s cozy, confident, and a bit cheeky – just like Chin Chin itself".

The beauty of the Fairy Tale Historical city of Regensburg is accented with the spirit of Chin-Chin and the Bohemian Hotel. The view from the bar of the Chin-Chin where tables spill out everywhere on the cobblestoned roads of the 3rd Century.

"The Bohemian is a soulful space. Stylish, but never superficial. Casual, but always intentional. It’s a place where people feel seen and where the city’s rhythm can be felt. As we transition into Hotel Chin-Chin, we’re not leaving Bohemian– we’re becoming even more of a lifestyle than a location."

Is Chin Chin the best bar in                                Regensburg?

"We’ll let the guests answer that               – but let’s just say:
if Regensburg had a                                 heartbeat                                  at night, it
would echo from Chin Chin"

"For creating moments that feel real."
     "Leben. Sein Schlafen. Genießen."

Is it possible to share a
           team moment?

"One night after a long,  sold-out weekend, we all ended up in the bar – shoes off, music on, still in uniform. No stress, just pure joy. Someone opened a bottle of champagne, and we
toasted not to numbers, but to being part of something we believe in."
Team Chin-Chin Bar
It seems to me, Jurgen, that at Bohemian Hotel & Chin Chin Bar, what happens in the "BO" stays in the "BO" Boss; but is there any special guest moment that you can share with us?

"A couple once celebrated their engagement with us.
He proposed during check-in, she said yes
over a welcome drink, and by dinner, the whole team was in on the                                                          celebration. We decorated their room with candles, played their song in the hallway – and they laughed."

I love the stories that Jurgen told us, and so I am invited to try their hospitality a couple of days during my interviews of the best in Regensburg. The first morning, I had their Acai Bowl, they actually have 3 versions of it, and mine is super healthy. The Chef in the morning is amazing. I felt that I had a breakfast of Champions to start my 3 days of the city!
A night after, I had dinner. They have what I would call an exotic menu. Some items you recognize yet served with a twist. They have gluten free options, but not the stale boring kind. Chin Chin Feine Barkultur in Regensburg - FalstaffI had Beetroot salad with mint in a glass dish, more beets than I could possibly eat in one sitting served with scrumptious buckwheat bread and I paired it with their Camembert fondue with pear, rosemary & ciabatta.  They were both on the appetizer list and together more than I could eat. Pairing it with a 0% beer and all served with charm and sophistication, I had a very special dinner. I could eat here every night and every morning and have something different. So happy that the elegant Chin-Chin is part of the Bohemian and in the future soon a surprise!

The bottles are so beautiful and elegant. Arabic style, which to me has always seemed so exotic and mysterious. The ancient Orient of spices, the discreet scent of perfume and cologne in the air is very romantic.

            A very special class of

And besides, Ahmad is super fun and lets you try all of these so you can find the perfect one.

"The oils come from France," says Ahmad. "I import each of these and mix the perfumes that you choose. To do my own laboratory, as in Syria, is something that I would love to have in the future. At the moment, I am happy to help guests with their preferences. They make great gifts, too, of course and especially at Christmas and holidays."
That is true. I love to receive a personal gift that has a special attachment to it. Perfume is very personal, and the choice is specific to each individual. I have now changed my 18-year choice of Chopard Casmir to Dark Mirage! Latakiapefrumes (@latakiapefrumes) | TikTok
Ahmad, who is in his 30s, began making perfumes with his father when he was 15. The name of his company is Latakia, after the Syrian city of that name, where his family had the perfumery. "I came to Germany in 2015 as a refugee and took language classes and worked as a barber here in Regensburg. I saved and in 2023 started my perfume business. My first day of opening the store is January 12, 2024."
That is success. That is drive. And that is perseverance. Bravo.
Here is Ahmad making my perfume. You can ask to sample all of the scents and choose one that you love.

                       Hi Rudolph here at ActionSports

I have known Rudolph about 15 years. He is always happy. If you taught scuba and took dives all the time in the most beautiful places in the world...you would be too! Come say hello. He doesn't bite, and according to Rudolph, neither do the sharks.
"Look, coconuts falling from the trees kill more people every year on the beach than sharks. But I never see people when they see a coconut say, "Run it's a coconut!""
                                                  0941 54400
I ask Rudolph if these are the new Scuba suits & he laughs & tells me that they are the apri-scuba suits. So, you can look super fashionable on the dock after you scuba.
I, personally, am not too fond of being near sharks, but I love Manta Rays. I find these sea animals so beautiful.
If you decide to travel to Egypt and scuba dive, you can do 5 days, 10 dives for 200 euros after you're certified with some of the best diving in the World.

Scuba diving is a very              affordable sport.

If you have children, they have scuba suits & they're about 95 euros. A warm weather adult is about 300 euros, and a cold weather adult is about 500 euros. They last forever & you can add these to your luggage as they are soft & foldable.
See? Told you. Now, let's scuba!
So, if I take the course and I am certified, what do I have to buy on my 3 months back packing Europe to dive in the sea?

"Well, I own the scuba shop, so I want you to buy it all!" laughs Rudolph. "But. personally, I don't want to wear someone else's suit. which they do give you on dives. So, I would buy a wetsuit, And I don't want to wear a mouthpiece that someone else had, so I would buy a mouthpiece and goggles. But. they do give you all of that when you go diving. It is included. So, technically, you could take my course. be certified and you're on your way!"

Okay ready to be certified in                           Regensburg?
It is super affordable and surprises me.
"You have 3 days in the textbook, all of which is done via eBook now, 2 full days in the pool learning the equipment and 2 full days at the Lake.      It is quite fun and after 7 days, you can travel everywhere around the world and scuba dive," says Rudolph.

So, how many thousands of euros is that costing me?
Rudolph laughs. he laughs a lot and that is because he has the funniest job in the entire world.

"It is only 599 euros total                    for the 7 days to be certified.                           People think it is much more,               but it is very affordable."

Rudolph is actually so good at scuba that he is a scuba instructor for instructors!
"Well, they come here, they learn from me, and they travel around the world to the best scuba places and teach there. Some are in Egypt, some Philippines, some Maldives. If you love the sharks, come to the Maldives with us on our trips."

"I have swam & seen about
              5,000 to 10,000 sharks
in my 30 + years of scuba.
    And I am safe always."

I ask Rudolph if he has ever pet wild dolphins, for instance. "No don't pet the sea animals. That is, my number one rule. As a matter of fact, I tell all of my guests and students, don't touch anything that is in the scuba dives. If you do, it will scatter, and you will be alone in your dive with your fellow guests, and all the fish will zoom away. Just swim and enjoy the beauty of the sea."

With comfy plush blue velvet chairs and a sleek modern eclectic interior, it invites you in to try their very different burgers. Gourmet, yes; yet with surprising twists and ingredients that I found of interest to me. I had the Palermo Fries (yes for the City in Sicily) and paired it with the Sicilian Burger!

I had the pleasure of interviewing the owners of Hamburgerei, a Surprisingly Refreshing Gourmet Burger Boutique that opened its doors 12 years now in Munich. With 9 cities, the duo Jorn & Karsten have pioneered the Specialty Burger Trend in Bavaria.
"We have a process of using Charcoal to grill the burgers, instead of in a pan, and it gives the meat a natural flavor. We don't soak the burgers in cooking oil. Some people love it, some don't.  All the meat we buy from Bavarian farmers, and we mince the meat daily in the morning. All home-made, which we're very insistent on. Our bread for our buns we make ourselves every morning," says Jorn.
And the name? Hamburgerei is parallel to a Bakery for Sweets. It is a Hamburgery for Hamburgers!
Alessandro, the director of the Regensburg location, introduced me to the pair via telephone, and I met both recently in Munich.  But not before Alessandro enticed me into trying something on the menu. It is a difficult choice as they have some exotic options. Such as Sweet-Chili-Persian-Ginger-Coriander-Chutney, hummus, cucumber yoghurt, parsley & salad mix. Or try Alessandro's favorite which is pesto cream & parmesan chipotle.

"The American has 2 big beef patties, 3 kinds of cheese, BBQ Sauce, Onions, Sriracha mayo & Salad Mix. Don't be offended, we just thought that American culture likes really big burgers and lots of stuff on it," says Jorn when he tells me about the reason some of the burgers are named the way they are.
"For me, my favorite is The Frenchman: Fig Mustard, apricot and nut kernel chutney, grilled goat cheese & arugula," says Jorn. Hmm...

Besides Cocktails, they have Thomas Henry Tonics and Fanta! Along with Craft beer and an interesting choice of a beer named, you guessed it, Hamburgerei! Premium Photo | Snack for burger graphic composition

And in Regensburg location, they have the Regensburg Burger. Of course, Beef with Grilled Regensburg Sausages and Sauerkraut with Sweet Mustard.
For Karsten, he loves, "The Mexican burger. It has been my favorite from day one. Most of the burgers have cultural influence and we have been to all of the countries that the burgers are associated with. Except Mexico. But when you think of Guacamole, Tortilla Chips, & Jalapenos, you think of Mexico, so now it is the Mexican Burger."
It is literally 100 meters, at the most, from the River Danube and the Viking Boats. Set in a beautiful garden on the back side of the restaurant, it shares with the Cinema. You can relax and enjoy the beauty of Regensburg and the Burgers of Hamburgerei. The drinks are great too.       Hamburgerei Regensburg | Wolt | Lieferservice | Regensburg

"Yes, my mom's name is Barbara, my grandmother is Barbara, and I am Benita Barbara. I worked with a very good friend of mine, who's best friend is a calligraphy artist in Tyrol. I only met her online, on face chats and we worked together to come up with my logo. She is very good and very creative, and I am very happy with her design from my plans. She listened to me and she designed just what I wanted." Yes, I tell her that the design is playful, yet elegant. Perfect. I ask her if she knows the American song, "Ba Ba Ba BaBa Baran," and she laughs, "Of course I do, " says Benita Barbara, "It is American. I have met so many Americans that come in here and the first thing they ask me is I have Riesling wine. Of course I do. They are very happy to hear that and they always order the Riesling and the cheese and meet plates that they share."

"My boyfriend, Jorg, which is George in English, is a wine expert, and so when the time came for us to select the wine, we already had a good start. I have 80 plus wines and I am proud to say that I have visited and tasted every wine I have, except for a couple of Italian wines and my prosecco. The rest we journey to the vineyard and with great pleasure we are invited to try the wine. I have never met nicer people than the people that own vineyards. So very kind," says Benita. Of course, they drink wine for a living, they're probably the happiest people on earth,I think to myself. I keep calling her Barbara & she says that everybody does that, but she is Benita. Barbara is her middle name.
The rustic charm is somewhat hers & somewhat the historical society of Regensburg. "Well for instance, if I want to paint on a certain wall or change it in anyway, even hanging a picture, the Government of Regensburg told me I could not. So, I have to be creative." Benita says. However, having started, "as the art gallery director of a couple of galleries in the city," Benita Barbara knows how to aesthetically please the eye. "I thought of letting some artists hang their pictures/their art here, but nothing has caught my eye yet. It has to be the right fit, & when that artist comes, I will know it."

                                      at Stadtamhof 13
Walk from the old town opposite the Devil's Stone Bridge & welcome to Klappe, the old-fashioned bar where a movie theater used to be attached to the back and the entire place is real traditional vintage with 30-year-old cinema pictures and memorabilia. Along with many board games, the locals and students coming every year to Regensburg have a great time yelling and partying, while eating traditional Bavarian food & drinking very cheap beer.
As I am walking from the bike store where I rent bikes to ride while I am in Regensburg, I almost get run over by the many BURGERFEST TRUCKS setting up (remember the famous scene in the movie JAWS where all the fishermen take every boat in the world to catch the shark?) welcome to Regensburg! Where every day the locals sit on councils trying to imagine another festival in the city to celebrate drinking their famous Bavarian beer & partying. BUT wait! my absolute favorite bar, KLAPPE, has the actual owners standing outside talking about the perimeters of their allowed table service amoung all the Festive Stand Placements. Klappe in Stadtamhof – Bild von Klappe, Regensburg - Tripadvisor
Dominik is all smiles. He is a bartender, too, so that could explain the situation. "I've worked here for 7 years, and I approached Karl with a couple other colleagues and asked if we could be members of the cooperativa. He said yes," says Dominik. Karl starts laughing, very easy-going guy, Karl is, by the way,"Yes of course. I said yes. Now he is the CEO & I can have more fun."
With a view like that...see the cobblestones? You have to either walk on the grass near the riverbanks or the cobblestones in Regensburg. The city heals my soul. "The beer helps, too," says Karl when he tells me how long he has been coming to Klappe. "For about 7 years I came here, okay, every day, as a guest. In 2003 I bought it and made it into a cooperativa. We have several people that have investments into the company, and we all contribute, either bartending, cooking, directing. I am the CEO, but I handed the title to Dominik last week. Here he comes.  He is the one in shorts," says Karl.
And right on cue, (of course, it is KLAPPE) comes Dominik.
Come on Sunday and you see that huge platter? 8.70 euros. That is right. All the other days have amazing specials for drinks as you can see. "We want it to be authentic, laid back, fun & cheap. That is what KLAPPE is about. People love it."
I have been eating their french fries with so much mayonnaise it is out of stock for about 10 years. KLAPPE, Regensburg - Restaurant Bewertungen, Telefonnummer & Fotos - Tripadvisor

                                         WURSTKUCHL RESTAURANT
& My GERMAN Candy pair up for USA Sweet Mustard!
Dubbed the "WORLD'S OLDEST SAUSAGE", Regensburg's Wurstkuchl has the very best. Some people really top the sauerkraut on it, but mostly I love the SWEET GERMAN MUSTARD.

The Apples don't fall far from the Tree; or in this case; the Cabbages.

"Theo, my son, has an interest in Music. Maybe marketing with the restaurant, but not as much interest in the Wurstkuchl as his brother. However, he took one year to plan a huge festival that he named: "Sound of Sausage" and he set it up here outside the restaurant from 4pm to 10pm. Over 1,500 people came. It was so many people, and it was a lot of fun. Now, we'll do it every year."
We start giggling at the name of "Sound of Sausage," but Theo just smiles a little wondering why we find it so funny! "It is funny. A very funny name," I say.
Theo shows me music videos from TIK TOK of them canvassing the city to let the residents know, along with their music and people are improvising dances when they meet him. Very fun and very funny.
With Andrea, the boss of Wurstkuchl Restaurant in Regensburg, always has funny stories to tell me; as a matter of fact, the 1-2 hour, "just 5 minute chat" is usually filled with laughter and giggles. Today is of course the same.  It helps when you are sitting at the Wurstkuchl Restaurant on the River that once used to be the construction office of the Stone Bridge in 1135 to 1146. Yes, that "Stone bridge of the fabled "Devil's Bridge".

When you're eating the great sausages that the Wurstkuchl and the Schricker-Meier family have been making for the last 2 centuries, about 1806 to be exact, you don't really need any stories to make it feel as if you're in a fairy tale. However, it is nice to have the stories anyway.
What is the story of the German mustard? You can almost hear Andreas being questioned when younger by Brigitte Meier-Portrait of the senior manager Brigitte Meier
"Well," the tale begins, "I was at a Special Foods Convention in San Francisco and I had a stand for my homemade Sweet German Mustard." Okay. "Two guys approached me and they were originally from Germany. Dieter & Martin. They wanted to add my German Mustard to their company, My German Candy. And so now I am with My German Candy in USA."  You can find the Sweet Homemade mustard on Amazon, too, under My German Candy. So, if you want that famous Sweet mustard while in America, you can now have it.

"I only sell about 1,000 Sweet Mustard in America a year with My German Candy, but that is about all I can make for the company anyway. The Sauerkraut we make I can't even make enough for my restaurant," says Andreas. "We need 60 Tons of Sauerkraut every year and I only produce 40 tons. It is a storage and supply problem and I have to outsource 3 months of the year." 60 Tons! O My Gosh.
Andreas says, "Yes, well it is because the only item that we have that comes with the sausages is the sauerkraut!" O Okay that is why!
The Oldest Recipes of Bratwurst in the world, only the Butcher knows it! That is for the SWEET MUSTARD, too. Boss and employees in the Sauerkrautkeller

                                           Domplatz 5
                                      Restaurant TRAMONTANA
                                           located at Domplatz 5
The best surprise at the Croatian Restaurant, Tramontana, is Josip.
He has a super serious professional outlook on life. In America, we would call him a "Straight Shooter."  No nonsense, yet full of passion for his creations of authentic Croatian food only because it comes from Croatia.
Josip LOVES Croatia & even goes as far to say that Venice borders on Croatia, not the other way around.
PhotoSo, I want something from the restaurant that is authentic Croatian food. What do I order?
"The Cevapcici," Josip says. A couple of times. So, I have to ask what the Cevapcici is, although I am very certain that I should already know that. "Cevapcici is Paprika stuffed or with various items such as alvar or kajmak." Kajmak is a light whipped fluffy cream cheese found in Croatia. Everybody in Croatia eats Cevapcici I found out and they're the Croatian sausages with garlic & paprika. Photo of çevapcici
It is the little details that make a restaurant great. That make a person curious about the quality of the food. The chef is, of course, Croatian!  And Josip lets his reputation of 30 years as a very respected person in the culinary arts precedes him.
"Every item that I choose on the menu has the same care in ingredients and preparation as another. I want quality in my restaurant, and I know that the locals of Regensburg want that, too. Tourists come one or two days, and some restaurants don't care about their opinion. I do care."
Yes even the best pasta, the best tomatoes, olives and of course the best seafood.
Is the wooden decor of handmade tables what you would find in a real Croatian restuarant?
"No, not at all, " says Josip. Okay! "If you look on the pictures on the walls, that is what you would find in Croatia. The most beautiful people, waterfalls that are more beautiful than any other place on earth, people living life. And we have the freshest fish from the sea, not Venice."
"Everybody knows me in the community and industry, so I don't have to put huge signs outside saying, "here I am,"" says Josip when I ask him how he does publicity for Tramatona. I thought it was a "trauma" restaurant, so I am happy to learn it means, NORTH WIND.
He is super detail oriented in his application to choosing the best fish for the restaurant, the best cheese, the best ingredients and I say that I have never seen a person clean a blackboard to write on it so thoroughly before.
"Yes, well, it all starts here with the menu," he tells me in a very direct way. Of course it does.

One idea of his image of his Tramatona Restaurant? "We have a saying in Bavaria that people take a short trip for relaxation. We're the Mediterranean short trip at the Regensburg Cathedral," he says.

"The range of beef we have is of the highest quality in the world, such as U.S. Beef from Nebraska(Omaha), Wagyu, Fassona, Irish Hereford,  Mittelmeerfische und Krustentiere. The prices reflect that too!" laughs the Master Chef and owner, Mattia. "I am always surprised when people make reservations and say that they are driving 70 kilometers or more just to eat dinner here. The guests know the beef type that they want and the weight in grams every time. They are very educated when it comes to my menu. I guess when you pay that much you probably know what you are eating!" ps...Kobe Wagyu Beef can come to 1,000 euros per kilo! Enjoy! Image result for kreutzers regesnburg
When the guests come to Kreutzers(usually a 10 day reservations-in-advance guest!) they dress for their special night out, and their favorite treat is watching the chef prepare the meat on the grill on the island right in front of them. "Yes they always want to say hi to the chef and I allow the guests to walk into the kitchen to meet the kitchen chef, too!" says Mattia.

Does Mattia eat Wagyu Kobe steak everyday?  He laughs, "About once in a while, I love it, yet it is a very deep rich meat, so if you have it one day the next you can choose something different since we have lobster and prawns and great seafood, too, that we grill over the charcoal grills, that is what we are famous for. There is only about 10 places in Germany that have the charcoal grills.  Kreutzer´s is famous for the charcoal grill and the best meat. And I hope that they are entertained with me as I prepare it for the guests!""You know it takes many years to earn a respected reputation such as we have at Kreutzers," starts the funny interview with the head Boss, Mattia. "I have had my restaurant in Regensburg 30 years and of the last 8 here at the location at Prinz-Ludwig-Strasse 15. Every year I strive for perfection and to find around the world the rarest and the best meat. I believe the website shows the quality that we have and you can judge for yourself."  IMG_0770.jpeg

APOTHEKE Real Bar with "drinks and peanuts!" says the laid back boss, Christoph of the long standing simple bar where people of all ages love to come and talk with friends. Apotheke is probably one of the most popular sub-culture bars with the students and tourists from around the world in Regensburg Germany mostly since the boss, Christoph says, "The drinks are cheap and I serve peanuts in the shell that the people are more than happy to fling on the floor!" Okay. It has a very simple bar decor with seating outside where people often approach Christoph from the university asking to throw a event here.
"Most of the time, I don´t even know what the event is, for instance skateboarders                                      today hanging skateboards on the walls. The girl from the university asked if they could have a skateboarding party where they skate in the city, have some grilled food and come here about 21.00pm to throw party. They´re putting skateboards on the walls and I don´t know if they´re selling those skateboards or just showing them off!" he laughs and says, "it is a very simple and casual bar open to everybody."
Does he skateboard? I ask. "No,"! he laughs. "I love to ride horses and my girlfriend is a horse person!"

"My brewery is a local one named, Eichhofener with lager helles, pils, hopfengarten(craft bier), dunkles, festbier and leichtes helles. It is a good beer, one of the best local ones and here you can have from 2.80 to 3.40. I  think that is a very good price and although I don´t´do fancy cocktails, it is a bar,  I have good Gin, Rum and Whiskey." he says. And by the way, you can do Jack Daniels on the rocks for only 5.00euros!
As we chat, Christoph takes a huge bag of peanuts and pours the peanuts in a big silver bucket, and he just puts huge piles right on the bar. "Food!" he says laughing. I try a couple of peanuts and he says, "just throw the peanuts on the floor!" Okay!Ähnliches Foto

And while they don´t really have a teacup where you can wear your flapper dress and be yourself, you can wear your flapper dress and lounge on the comfortable couches hidden behind the bar. There is leather seats, worn with care and many hours of laughter and friendship and barstools to chat about life with Christoph who says he has many friends from America who invite him to visit and that his girlfriend actually learned horsemanship in America. Note to tourists that of course includes backpackers, I love visiting Regensburg University asking the students what their favorite drinking bar is, "Apotheke," is always the answer. They have cocktail bars and dance clubs, but the hangout is "Apotheke" and Why? "Friendly owner and cheap beer and we can be ourselves..." are some of the answers.

"It is usually that way on a Friday and Saturday, as the students seem to love the bar and either stay at  home drinking til midnight and then go to a Dance Club in Regensburg, or come here and talk a couple of hours, listening to the music and just being in a casual atmosphere. The bar is supposed to be a place where you can feel comfortable. My drinks are cheap compared to most places and it is really about the feeling of the Orange Bar, I guess that brings the people here. I have people of all ages, too. From 18 to 65!" laughs Daniel.

Now, I don´t know whether the creativeness of the restaurant as the chef or the music is my favorite. We still have the guest artists that exhibit in the restaurant every year, too. That is something I try to encourage. To bring new artists to the recognition that they deserve. Now for a couple of months we have Normanno Locci from Italy. "When I design of course as a Master Goldsmith sometimes the jewelry item that I am creating doesn´t exactly match the one I started to make. It all depends on the client. I have a idea that I start with and we work with each other. Mr. Mulbacher goes around the world to jewel shows and he chooses the stones. When he arrives back, he gives me the stones and tells me about each one. He tells me if he wants earrings made from such and such a diamond or a bracelet or necklace. I sketch what I imagine his vision is and he tweaks it a little. Sometimes he knows exactly what he wants and I make it. Or other times we work directly with the client that wants a custom ordered item," says the Master Goldsmith who I have had the pleasure of interviewing the last two years. He laughs, "That is Mr. Mulbacher´s job," he says, "I guess when you have 112 years and 4 generations of knowledge, and you are  a trained Goldsmith, you better be good at choosing the gems. Each Goldsmith is a designer in a sense and has his or her own style, such as the great fashion designers. Everybody around the world knows Mulbacher designs. I trust when Mr. Mulbacher gives me a stone and tells me what he wants designed from it. He sees my designs and I hope he is impressed and I learn from him everyday," says the Master Goldsmith at Muhlbacher's.
The bars of Regensburg, Germany, of which they rank 2 in the world for most bars per person, and although that could seem impressive the coolest thing about the bars of the Historical Heritage Site City is that each one is either in a brick stable, or dungeon! or old Palace...they are each individual and each one more beautiful than the next. It is quite amazing to see even the Irish Pub of Regensburg in a 1300 year old cellar! ha.                                     The famous Irish Bar Murphys Law.
With Irish Music lessons weekly and Pub Quiz in German and English great fun!

Must come for game night where they do questions and trivial pursuit and you have each table be a team. Every week they have games to involve the locals and the tourists, and the University that came a couple of years now to the ancient city has brought 25,000 students each year to mingle with the locals! http://www.murphyslaw-regensburg.de/                               Spielgelgasse 6 Regensburg Germany

And I especially love the Kasper Bar one and two, although honestly with 150 specialty bars hidden and tucked down cobblestoned alleys, some with live music every night, you are sure to find a favorite!                             Výsledek obrázku pro kaspar bar regensburg
